Stylish Cardboard-made Coffin and Table

by Hiroki Yanagisawa on June 14, 2010 11:58 PM

Don't Underestimate the Power of a Cardboard.

1 meter by 1 meter. Plus 1 meter height - this 1 cubic meter is equivalent to a load capacity of 3.7 tons. There is a "paper-derived" product that retains such physical property. It's a corrugated board called, Tri-Wall.

"Tri-Wall was originally developed in the United States, and its initial customer was the United States military, meaning high physical propertiy -shock absorption and load capacity--was required. Compared with a conventional corrugated box, where its layer is single, Tri-Wall retains 3 layers, making it impossible to fold by hand." Mr. Yukihiro Masuda, the CEO or WillLiFE, a subsidiary of Tri-Wall Japan, said.

Though its main usage is the field of shipping and logistics, Mr. Masuda has come up to a super-unique product. A coffin.

Ecoffin is made from Tri-Wall (inner-part) and kanbatsuzai (outer part) (trees, which need to be chopped down (called thinning) from a forest for its sustainable growth.)

"In Japan, a majority of coffin is made from a plywood, but ever since ecoffin was released in the market in 2006, it's increasing its share year by year. A part of the revenue is forwarded to carbon offset, and it seems that some of the customers are really favoring our approach." Mr. Masuda says.

Ecoffin (L1900 x W550 x H450) (mm)
JPY250,000/piece.
(Excluding tax)
The price includes 200kg worth of carbon offset certificate.

Also, a counter table at Eco-Plaza in Minato City was coordinated by Mr. Masuda.
The table top is also made from kanbatsuzai.
