ReDish (Part 3) : Next Step: 20% to 50% Ratio

by Hiroki Yanagisawa on March 10, 2010 3:35 PM

20 to 50. This is the next challenge that Green Life 21 faces. It's the ratio of recycled ceramics and virgin material when manufacturing ReDish. The current ratio is 20:80, 20 the recycled part, and it's shooting for 50%.
Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Research Institute, a prefecture funded research organization and a member of Green Life 21, has been conducting a research project to achieve this ratio since 2008. The project is funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

"We have 3 goals to achieve. One is the increase of the blend ratio. 20% to 50%. Second, decrease the burning temperature of an oven by 100C. Third, increase in flexural strength by x1.5." Mr. Kenji Tateishi, a person in charge of the research at Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Research Institute, said. "If these 3 elements can successfully be achieved, there will be a significant contribution to the emission of CO2."

At this stage, a team of Mr. Tateishi successfully produced samples, which qualify 3 criteria in a small lot by controlling a ratio of additives.

"But when samples are mass produced in a factory scale some of them cracks. A tuning of the material, as well as the factory's production process need to be adjusted."

The quest of ReDish continues.
