ReDish (Part 2) : How to make new dishes from broken/used dishes

by Hiroki Yanagisawa on March 2, 2010 6:00 PM

Crush, powderize, and mix. The rest is the same.

What's so great about ReDish is that it requires only one additional process to manufacture. As far as a facility for production and physical property of a dish go, there's no difference from creating a dish from a virgin material.
1. Crush used/broken dishes.
Most of the collected used/broken dishes go to Shinmei Refrax, a company specialized in crushing/mixing materials.

The dishes are crushed by a mega-crusher to fine powders. (Less than 1mm.)

2. Mix.
The powder is then shipped to clay manufacturers. 20% used/broken dish powder, 80% of virgin material, and additives are mixed in a mill.

The mix, or emersion is dried and pressed to sheets for an easy shipment.

3. Mold.
Stacks of sheets are delivered to a factory for molding.

Sheets are cut into circular chunk. Each piece is molded. The leftover is collected for reuse.

Then molded dishes are heated twice (800C for the first time. Then patterns are added and heated in a 1300C oven for the second time.)

And finally, the product. ReDish.
