a creative magic box / karappo

karappo/からっぽ
To many Tokyo-based creative industry personnel, karappo is referred as a "creative magic box". Throw in any creative task--2-D graphic work, 3-D work, web, music, phone application, music--to karappo and give sometime. You will surely get exactly what you've wanted.
karappo, or "emptiness" in Japanese, sounds paradoxical to what karappo is capable of. But Yasuaki Mio and Naokazu Terada, the duo consisting karappo, disagrees. "Though we handle many web design/programming and 2-D graphic design works, we don't want to restrain our work to a discipline of design. We also work on an installation project, programming, music creation, and in that sense, a word, karappo, gives an impression that we're capable of providing infinite possibilities."

Let's explore the world of karappo from the web-based works. karappo's work is known to be comprehensive and provide a one-stop-and-all solution. karappo tends to provide not only creative/art direction and design consulting, but also capable of providing flash work and database programming.
Hakuhodo Institute of Lifestyle and Living
Miraifukeisha
An example of a 2-D graphic work.
SANITA pharmacy
Here is non-design related work, an installation. karappo exhibited "Robotope", a 3-D installation, at MAKE: Tokyo Meeting 04.
Robotope is a hypothetical visualization of our world with an aid of 3 types of robot. Each robot has a gauge to show its energy capacity.
GREEN: Act as a plant.
When strong light is applied (ex: flash light) photosynthesis occurs and its energy increases.
When approached by a herbivore robot (blue): a herbivore eats plant's energy and hence, plant's energy decreases.
BLUE: Act as a herbivore.
When approaching towards a plant: a herbivore eats plant's leaves (energy packet) and herbivore's energy increases.
When approached by carnival robot (red): a carnival eats herbivore's energy and hence, herbivore's energy decreases.
RED: Act as a carnivore.
When approaching towards plants: a plant causes food poisoning and carnival's energy decreases.
When approaching towards a herbivore robot: a carnival eats herbivore's energy and carnival's energy increases.
Each robot is equipped with a light sensor to judge the distance of each robot.
INSTALLATION: Katakata (clitter-clatter) train
A set of plarail and music instruments are combined in katakatatrain. When a train runs over a black rail, an intruemnt, located near the rail triggers to sound. Similar futures apply when a train runs through various objects. Exhibited at Sozo Kukan 9001, Yokohama.
MUSIC
A live work, powered by Arduino, Xbee, servomotors, motors, solenoids, turntable, and other cheap instruments.
PHONE
What's more? An android-based application. MyQR is an adroid-based program, which allows you to exchange your phone information by scanning an auto-generated 2-D code.
Now you've seen the output of the magic box. Ready to pinch in a new creative idea?
Karappo's other professional works are available from its website.
